Meet U.S. Government Analyst and JGPR Academy Instructor: Matthew Kaplowitz

Biography

Matthew Kaplowitz began his intelligence career in 2003 when he was hired by the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). Matthew performed as an all-source analyst using all sources of intelligence, including human intelligence, open source intelligence, signals intelligence, and satellite intelligence to help the U.S. military achieve their tactical and strategic goals.

While at DIA, Matthew was the team leader of a multi-agency team that sought identify, characterize, and reverse-engineer underground facilities in his target area.

Matthew has also worked at the Department of Homeland Security headquarters in Washington, DC analyzing the threats to the U.S. border with Canada. He worked directly with the Border Patrol agents to set up a sting operation along the St. Lawrence River to help stop smugglers from illegally crossing the border.

While serving at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Matthew became increasingly interested in social media, how it worked, the various audiences, and the dynamics of an ever-changing social landscape, while providing research and reports that helped the senior CIA and White House leadership make national security decisions.

Additionally, he has supported the Departments of Treasury and Commerce, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), U.S. Border Patrol (USBP), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and others on a variety of projects.

Matthew currently manages 10 analysts at the Boston Regional Intelligence Center at Boston Police Headquarters who support the Boston Police Department (BPD) in their efforts against crime, drugs, gangs, financial crime, and cyber-crime, as well as keeping Boston’s critical infrastructure safe.

Concurrently, Matthew is also an instructor for a DHS-sponsored Open Source Intelligence course delivered nationwide to federal, state, and local law enforcement and intelligence analysts. He also delivers the same course in a virtual environment. Overall, he has delivered this course over 200 times nationwide.

He also holds a Top Secret Security Clearance from the U.S. Government but does not claim to be James Bond.

Matthew has a Bachelor’s degree from Colgate University with a dual major in International Relations and Peace Studies, and a dual Master’s degree from Boston University in International Relations and International Communications.

Matthew enjoys traveling wherever he can and has been to all but two U.S. states (Oregon and Kansas) as well as Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam (x2). He has traveled for work and pleasure to China, Israel, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Australia, and nearly every country in Europe.

He is married and has two teenagers at home, both of whom implore him to stop telling dad jokes.
