Why Social Media Matters

Social media is imperative to staying connected with your constituents. It is a way to share important news and event updates, to keep your community informed, and to stay connected with your audience. But where to begin?

Whether you are starting your account from scratch, or you have a social media page that hasn’t been used in months, JGPR Academy is here to help inspire and give you confidence on how to communicate on social media. The first step in the process is to recognize why social media matters, and the second step is to sign up for an upcoming JGPR Academy Social Media Strategy class.

Form a Community
Social media is not just about numbers; it is the community that you build. As a public safety department, school district, or municipality, it is inevitable that your platforms will already have an influx of followers. What makes your accounts influential is your ability to connect with others. At the root of it all, people thrive off of human interaction, even if that interaction is online. By building a community you make your organization more relatable and trustworthy. People will see your online presence and know that you care. More importantly, they will know that you are real people they can support.

Share your Positive Work
Your department is already doing amazing work on a daily basis, so why not post it? Social media can be an extremely useful avenue for sharing everything that you are doing. Whether it’s outreach programs, charity events, reaching important milestones, recent arrests or knocking down a fire — your followers will enjoy seeing the impact you are making for the community. In doing so, the community will feel inspired and grateful for the work being done, which can be a boon if you need a new facility or require other budget increases down the line.

Create Transparency
Every person that is following your social media accounts has a reason to do so. More often than not they want to see what you are doing: the improvements you are making, announcements you need to distribute, and where their taxpayer dollars are going. Use this to your advantage and prove the competency your department, municipality, or school district has. There is no longer a need to wait for the evening news or the next town meeting to release things, so share consistent updates in real time! Be transparent and hold yourself accountable online. Your followers will thank you for it, both online and through in-person interactions.
