JGPR Academy Holds Mindfulness in Law Enforcement Course

Mindfulness in Law Enforcement Led by Ret. Police Commander David Avery

CANTON — JGPR Academy held its first “Mindfulness in Law Enforcement” course today taught by Ret. Police Commander David Avery, who drew upon his more than 30 years of experience in policing.

It was the first full-day (8-hour) course offered by JGPR Academy.

Several students from various police departments took the course, in which Avery shared personal experiences from his own life and career and also engaged students to share their own experiences.

The course covered the following:

  • Common mental health issues faced by law enforcement professionals
  • Identifying signs of burnout and sources of burnout
  • The importance of emotional intelligence
  • Ways to deal and cope with mental health issues
  • How to ask for help, and who to ask

“Mental health and mindfulness are not easy things for anyone to talk about, but now more than ever there is a push to not only discuss these issues, but work to directly address them,” said JGPR Academy founder John Guilfoil. “Law enforcement professionals deal with these issues everyday, and can sometimes bring these issues home with them after a shift. The topics covered by Avery in this class are so critical to ensuring those in law enforcement have the knowledge and understanding they need to help themselves and potentially others who may be going through similar issues. We thank Avery for sharing his experiences as part of this very important class.”
