Mindfulness: More Important Than Ever

Last month, JGPR Academy held its first “Mindfulness in Law Enforcement” course taught by Ret. Police Commander David Avery. In the full-day class, Avery drew upon his more than 30 years of experience in policing to discuss topics such as the common mental health issues faced by law enforcement professionals, how to identify signs of and sources of burnout, the importance of emotional intelligence, ways to deal and cope with mental health issues, and more.

The course covered not only how law enforcement officers can deal with these issues, but how to ask for help and who they can turn to.

Mental health and mindfulness are not easy things for anyone to talk about. But if the past few years have taught us anything, it’s that now more than ever we must face these issues and engage in meaningful dialog around them.

While Avery’s course focused specifically on those in law enforcement, it is important to note that taking the time to properly care for one’s mental wellbeing has become increasingly vital regardless of occupation or background. For example, in his presentation Avery discusses the need to have a work-life balance and not transferring the stressors from your job to your family at the end of the day. This is something everyone should prioritize, whether you are a first responder, teacher, or in any other profession.

This month, we will be sharing a series of tips and helpful guidance on the many ways people can incorporate positive mental health practices into their everyday lives. We encourage you to not only read these tips but share them with your friends and loved ones.
